Convert a Recipe to Metric
Cups to grams, ounces to grams, °F to °C — and back to US measurements. Free, no sign-up.
To convert a recipe to metric, swap volumes for weights using ingredient-specific gram values — 1 cup all-purpose flour = 125 g, 1 cup granulated sugar = 200 g — convert liquids to millilitres (1 US cup ≈ 237 ml), and convert oven temperatures with °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9. The converters and charts below do all of it for you, in both directions.

Cups to Grams Conversion Chart
There is no single “cups to grams” number — a cup is a volume, and every ingredient packs that volume differently. A cup of honey weighs almost four times as much as a cup of rolled oats. Use the weight for your specific ingredient:
| Ingredient | 1 cup | ½ cup | ¼ cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 125 g | 63 g | 31 g |
| Bread flour | 130 g | 65 g | 33 g |
| Granulated sugar | 200 g | 100 g | 50 g |
| Brown sugar (packed) | 220 g | 110 g | 55 g |
| Powdered sugar | 120 g | 60 g | 30 g |
| Butter | 227 g | 114 g | 57 g |
| Milk | 244 g | 122 g | 61 g |
| Water | 237 g | 119 g | 59 g |
| Honey | 340 g | 170 g | 85 g |
| Rolled oats | 90 g | 45 g | 23 g |
| Uncooked rice | 185 g | 93 g | 46 g |
| Cocoa powder | 86 g | 43 g | 22 g |
| Cornstarch | 128 g | 64 g | 32 g |
| Table salt | 288 g | 144 g | 72 g |
For weights: 1 ounce ≈ 28.35 g and 1 pound ≈ 454 g. For liquids: 1 US cup ≈ 237 ml, 1 tablespoon ≈ 15 ml, 1 teaspoon = 5 ml.
A Worked Example: Cookie Recipe, US to Metric
Here is a classic chocolate chip cookie ingredient list converted line by line. Multiply each cup amount by that ingredient's grams-per-cup, leave the spoon measures alone, and convert the oven temperature last:
| Original (US) | Metric | The math |
|---|---|---|
| 2¼ cups all-purpose flour | 281 g | 2.25 × 125 g |
| 1 cup butter (2 sticks) | 227 g | 1 × 227 g |
| ¾ cup granulated sugar | 150 g | 0.75 × 200 g |
| ¾ cup brown sugar, packed | 165 g | 0.75 × 220 g |
| 1 tsp baking soda | 1 tsp | keep spoons under ~5 g |
| 2 large eggs | 2 large eggs | no change |
| Bake at 375°F | 190°C (170°C fan) | (375 − 32) × 5⁄9 |
Rounding to the nearest 5 g (281 g → 280 g) is fine — that's well within the accuracy of measuring by cup in the first place.
Oven Temperatures: °F to °C (and Fan Ovens)
The exact formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 — so 350°F ≈ 177°C. In practice you round to the nearest common dial setting, and for a fan (convection) oven you reduce the temperature by about 20°C because circulating air cooks faster:
| °F | °C (conventional) | °C (fan) |
|---|---|---|
| 275°F | 135°C | 115°C |
| 300°F | 150°C | 130°C |
| 325°F | 165°C | 145°C |
| 350°F | 175°C | 155°C |
| 375°F | 190°C | 170°C |
| 400°F | 200°C | 180°C |
| 425°F | 220°C | 200°C |
| 450°F | 230°C | 210°C |
Convert a Recipe to US Measurements
Going the other way — a European recipe in grams and Celsius that you want in cups and Fahrenheit — is the same chart in reverse. Divide grams by the ingredient's grams-per-cup: 250 g flour ÷ 125 = 2 cups; 100 g granulated sugar ÷ 200 = ½ cup. For liquids, divide millilitres by 237 for cups or by 15 for tablespoons, and convert temperatures with °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32. Every converter on this page accepts input on either side.
Conversion Traps to Watch For
- Don't use one factor for everything.A cup of flour is 125 g but a cup of honey is 340 g. Generic “1 cup = 240 g” charts will wreck a bake — always convert per ingredient.
- Keep spoons for small amounts.Baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices usually weigh under 5 g per teaspoon — below the reliable range of most home scales. Metric recipes use teaspoons and tablespoons for these too.
- “Imperial” isn't one system.A US pint is 473 ml but a UK pint is 568 ml; an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml versus 15 ml in the US and UK; and the metric cup used in Australia and New Zealand is 250 ml, not the US 237 ml. Check where the recipe was written.
Why Grams Beat Cups for Baking
A cup of flour can weigh anywhere from roughly 110 g to 150 g depending on whether you spoon it in gently or scoop and pack it — a swing of 20% or more that shows up directly in your crumb. Brown sugar has the same problem in reverse: “packed” means different things to different hands. A scale reads 220 g the same way every time, for everyone.
Weighing is also faster and cleaner: set the bowl on the scale, tare, pour, tare, pour. No cups to wash, no leveling with a knife. That's why professional bakers work in grams — and why converting a favorite recipe to metric once is worth the five minutes.
Scale the Recipe While You're At It
Converting units and resizing servings go hand in hand — metric makes scaling easier, since multiplying 281 g by 1.5 beats multiplying 2¼ cups. These free tools handle the serving math:

Metric Conversion FAQ
How do I convert a recipe to metric?
Convert each volume to a weight using ingredient-specific gram values (1 cup all-purpose flour = 125 g, 1 cup granulated sugar = 200 g, 1 cup butter = 227 g), convert ounces to grams (1 oz ≈ 28.35 g), liquids to millilitres (1 US cup ≈ 237 ml), and oven temperatures with °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9. Or paste the recipe URL into the Drizzlelemons recipe converter to convert every measurement at once.
How many grams are in one cup?
It depends on the ingredient, because cups measure volume and grams measure weight. One cup of all-purpose flour weighs 125 g, granulated sugar 200 g, butter 227 g, honey 340 g, and water 237 g. Always use an ingredient-specific chart rather than a single conversion factor.
What is 350°F in Celsius?
350°F is about 177°C. In practice, set a conventional oven to 175°C, or a fan (convection) oven to about 155–160°C — fan ovens cook faster, so reduce the temperature by roughly 20°C.
How do I convert a recipe to US measurements?
Work the chart in reverse: divide grams by the ingredient’s grams-per-cup (250 g flour ÷ 125 = 2 cups), divide millilitres by 237 for cups or by 15 for tablespoons, and convert temperatures with °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32. The converters on this page work in both directions.
Should I convert teaspoons and tablespoons to grams?
Usually no. Amounts under about 5 g — baking soda, baking powder, salt, spices, vanilla — sit at the edge of a home scale’s accuracy, and spoons are already standardized (1 tsp = 5 ml, 1 tbsp = 15 ml). Metric recipes keep spoon measures for small quantities too.
Is this metric recipe converter free?
Yes. The measurement converters and conversion charts on this page are completely free with no sign-up. Converting a whole recipe by URL with the Drizzlelemons recipe converter is also free to start.
